Microgeneration Glossary

Below are a few explanations of the Microgeneration terms that we thought you might find useful.

The Renewable Order (RO)

The RO is a Government initiative to encourage more renewable electricity generation and is an electronic certificate based scheme. Two certificates, known as a Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC), are issued for each megawatt hour (MWh or 1000KWhs) of renewable electricity generated for wind turbines.

Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC)

Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) are awarded by Ofgem, the electricity regulator, for every 1MWh (= 1000KWhs) of power generated from a renewable source.

Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs)

These are used by suppliers to prove they supply renewable energy. On their own they don’t have a market value.

Who Claims My ROCs and REGOs?

Your supplier agent will claim all ROCs and REGOs as an authorised agent on your behalf. Generators will not need to make the claims themselves.

The agent will require all Generators to be ROC and REGO accredited by Ofgem or agree to go through the accreditation process. They will help and guide you through this process and will act as an “agent” in order to claim ROCs and REGOs on your behalf. This allows the supplier to claim for all smaller generators together which increases the value of the certificates and reduces the work for you!
